New Year's Morning After
Jan. 1st, 2004 09:42 amWell, what I saw of the New Year's Eve coverage last night was okay. I tuned in for the ball drop, stayed on for a few songs by Hall & Oates and others. The amusing bit was watching them go back to Dick Clark at Times Square ever so often so Dick could say "Nothing's happening here; everyone's gone home and the sanitation staff are cleaning up the zillion tons of confetti we dropped along with the ball. Oh, by the way, I'd like to thank my cameramen..." They switched back to the man every fifteen minutes for this revelation to be repeated anew.
The closest thing to a New Year's Resolution I'm making is to write "2004" in my checkbook on all the remaining checks there (which I've already done). I can think of a whole lot of things I'd like to do, but it seems like calling them New Year's Resolutions would be the kiss of death, as then I'd feel like I'd "have" to do them and then I'd go out of my way not to do them because nobody likes being forced into anything.
Not sure how I'm going to spend my New Year's Day. Watch movies and do last-minute cleanup, I guess. Kind of a funny excuse for a holiday, really...the end of one arbitrary period of time and the start of another. I'm never entirely sure what I'm supposed to be celebrating. At least with Christmas or my birthday or one of the presidential or military holidays I have some idea.

Thursday night thoughts
Jan. 1st, 2004 08:52 pmJust in case you ever wondered what the meaning of life was...now you can find out. Someone's offering it on eBay. I guess you really can buy anything on-line these days.
I've managed to get my CueCat bar code scanner working with my computer. Now I can either scan bar codes directly using the drivers, or I can scan gibberish into programs that offer plugins to convert them into bar codes. It's funny, though...in order to do it, I have to plug a PS/2 keyboard in, because the system won't notice it's there unless it has a PS/2 keyboard hooked onto the end of it. So I have the USB keyboard which I actually use sitting on the desk in front of me...and an old PS/2 keyboard propped up against the wall behind the computer.
It's kind of funny, though...now that I actually have the CueCat hooked up...I don't have any use for it. I already entered every DVD I own (and have convenient) into DVD Profiler by hand the other day, and haven't been able to make Catnip work with any other websites yet.
Spent much of the day watching episodes of Irresponsible Captain Tylor...it occurred to me that I borrowed
tbutler's Tylor discs when I visited him and had yet to watch any of them. It wouldn't do not to have at least some of it watched by the time he gets here...as it happened, I managed to get through the whole second disc. Which is good.
Time to make the final preparations for Travis's visit tomorrow. Little last minute cleaning, little readying of this and that. Might as well get to it...
