Wow. Thanks to the magic of AvantGo, I now have a fully-functional LiveJournal client on my CLIE. I am writing this entry on it, one slow Graffiti letter at a time.

Well, I suppose it will give me something to do on long car journeys.

Just went out and saw Men in Black II, or, as some people are calling it, MIIB (after the logo in the movie ads). Nifty movie--better than the first one, I'd say. There are quite a few nifty little in-jokes and references scattered through it, just as there were in the first one...only this one doesn't take the long time introducing the characters that the first one had to...it gets right into the action.

Before going down, I hit the SMSU campus to get some money from the ATM. The first ATM, in the sport center parking lot, was out of order, so I had to drive over to the one by the bookstore. As I walked from the bookstore parking lot to the machine, I was struck by how empty the campus was. It just seems wrong somehow to see a college campus like that...with no people in it, as far as the eye can see. Sort of a Night of the Comet or Quiet Earth feeling...everybody else in the world is gone, and you're still there.

Thinking of going home for the evening, spending the fourth with family. They're barbecuing, and in my current financial state, hey, I can always use a free meal.

Clie still seems to be holding up; I think they really did fix the problem this time. (Miracles never cease.)

And congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] demiurgent on the fix that's in. I'm glad to know he's going to be feeling better.

Spent a few hours visiting the folks, eating a delicious dinner, and reading a bit of Steven King's first Dark Tower or Gunslinger or whatever novel on my Clie. Afterward, checked my email, showed my Mom the BookCrossing website, and printing out a few more labels. I collected a dozen or so more books to bring up and release...who knows, what with the news site carrying it tomorrow, maybe I'll get some of them picked up and read. I also spent some time looking for a very old book that a friend had wanted to buy from me if I could find, but had no joy.

Left at 9:00, just as it was getting dark. And, this being the day it was, I was treated to an interesting trip back...especially since 90% of the drive was through rural areas, where fireworks are not forbidden. Yep, bursts of light going off to the left and right and front and behind, all the way up to the Springfield city limits...and sporadically after that. Noticed one of our banana-yellow fire trucks trundling around as I drove back...presumably to tell people to stop setting them off inside the city limits.

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way... )
