I don't know how many folks here have heard of Webscriptions, the e-book program that Baen Publishing has, but in a nutshell, for $15, you get all the books that Baen publishes in a given month, as e-books--downloadable in any of a variety of free, open formats for PDA, PC, or printing. The books are doled out starting three months prior to publication date: the first month, you get the first 50% of each book; the second month, 25% more is added; the third month, you get the last 25%. You can check for yourself if you'd like to know more about the formats of availability; that's not important just now.

What is important is that, every time one buys a month of Baen books, he has the option to give that same month as a gift to someone who has never before bought from Baen. And I'm looking for someone who'd like to receive that gift this month--I figure I might as well not waste it, and maybe someone else would like to see part of that next Honor Harrington book a little early.

I'm planning to buy the October webscription, which includes the following books:

  • War of Honor -- David Weber (the newest book in the Honor Harrington series)
  • More Than Honor -- David Weber, David Drake, S.M.Stirling
  • Echoes of Honor -- David Weber
  • The Seas of Venus -- David Drake
  • The Tide of Victory -- Eric Flint, David Drake
  • Fallen Angels -- Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven, Michael Flynn
  • Bolo Strike -- William H. Keith Jr., Keith Laumer
  • The first half of these will be up in approximately two weeks.

If you don't mind reading e-books, and would like to get a crack at the first half of the newest Honor Harrington book three months before publication, leave a comment here so I'm not deluged with email. First come first serve!

    Sigh

I was rummaging around on giFT and happened across a whole bunch of Piers Anthony books. I went ahead and downloaded the first Mode book, given that I have the dead tree version at home. I'd rather liked it when first I'd read it, and in fact some of the concepts in my shared [livejournal.com profile] compassrose chancel are borrowed from one of the characters in that book.

I've not even finished rereading the first chapter, and already I feel like throwing the thing at the nearest wall. Which...would be bad, since it's on my PDA. How could I ever have liked this tripe?
