I was rummaging around on giFT and happened across a whole bunch of Piers Anthony books. I went ahead and downloaded the first Mode book, given that I have the dead tree version at home. I'd rather liked it when first I'd read it, and in fact some of the concepts in my shared [livejournal.com profile] compassrose chancel are borrowed from one of the characters in that book.

I've not even finished rereading the first chapter, and already I feel like throwing the thing at the nearest wall. Which...would be bad, since it's on my PDA. How could I ever have liked this tripe?

are you speaking of the xanth series?

I read the entire series one summer in high school. I found that it seemed like he either had a ghost writer or just really bad days. there'd be a spurt of two good books, the next one would suck, the one after that was mediocre, and then get a great one in there.

I remember liking the Juxtaposition stories as well, but with the same similar feeling of the xanth stuff. I'm sorry you're not enjoying the books.

I've never thought highly of Anthony's series work, though I liked Omnivore and Protho Plus, books he wrote rather a long time ago. The most recent book I liked by him was one he co-wrote with Mercedes Lackey in the late 90s, If I Pay Thee Not in Gold. It was, well, like a collaboration between latter-day Anthony and Lackey - though the plot of the book was nothing like the blurb on the back, to its benefit. ("She's a sexy sorceror, he's her muscular slave! Anything between them is forbidden"... and, well, never so much as comes up, thankfully.)
