I'm here at MCI on lunchbreak; I've eaten lunch in their cafeteria and have about fifteen minutes left. I'll make this entry short so I have time to check my email.

I've discovered that the Java telnet client I set up on my Linux box's webspace works pretty well. Maybe not perfectly, but good enough for checking the mail. A downside is that these personal-use terminals only allow one browser window to be open at once, so I can't update my LJ and have a terminal open at the same time, but oh well. It's much better than I could do at Kmart.

It's funny...what with Kmart and now MCI, this is the second company for which I've worked that experienced a much-publicized bankruptcy.

Got our photos taken yesterday for our ID badges, and the badges were handed out just before lunch. It's a decent picture; at least it looks like me. :) I'm looking forward to this job, I think.

I'm certainly impressed by the level of training we're being given. Four weeks, then a couple weeks phone bay "apprenticeship." Kmart, I was lucky if they gave me one day before turning me loose on the floor. I think this is going to be a good deal, if I can make it last.

That's all I have time for; more from home tonight, maybe.

Well, I'm home again. Today we learned all the nitty gritty alphabet soup jargon of the phone industry, including LATAs, LECs, BOCs, ILECs, and a partridge in a pear tree. Kind of brain-numbing, but hopefully tomorrow will be more interesting.

Also, I've been told that there's another training course starting next Monday, and that they're looking for more hires. If the job appeals to anyone in the Springfield area, please drop by the MCI building near the Primrose Center and fill out one of their computerized applications. If you do, please be sure and list Christopher E. Meadows where it asks for who referred you (so I get the credit if you get hired).

Tonight I'll be dropping by the monthly Bookcrossing Meetup for the Bookcrossing website. Mudhouse, 7 p.m. It's funny...out of all my meetups, this is the only one I've ever attended that actually met more than once. It's hardly the one I would have expected to last, but it seems to have outstripped even the Livejournal meetup for my community.

Onward and upward!
