Well, finally heard back from Quikdine today. Apparently the driver who'd given notice changed his mind and was staying, so there wouldn't be any openings after all. Phooey.

More jobhunting stuff )

And one more thing...tomorrow evening is when the first LiveJournal Meetup happens. Looking forward to seeing folks there!

Well, just got done taking the clerical test. Took about two hours, and was every bit as banal as you might expect. One test on alphabetizing, simple arithmetic, and matching names and things; one on grammar/spelling/reading comprehension. Then a word processing typing test, at which I got 106 words per minute and 8 errors. Not bad at all.

One thing of interest--as I was just about to take the test, my phone rang. Someone in K.C. saw my Monster resume and called me with the possible offer of a 3-month job. I hated to do it, but I asked him to call me back in half an hour, as I was a little busy with the test thing. That's about 15 minutes from now; if he doesn't call me, I'll call him--that's the handy thing about having a cellphone with caller ID.

Three months...hmm, well, not what I'm aiming for precisely, but it'll be better than nothing, won't it?

Called and spoke with the fellow, on the way home. The job is a 3 month Linux sysadmin contract job in K.C. They're going to call me about a phone interview later on at some point.

I sure do hope I get it. Of course, if I do, I'll have to decide what to do about it. Put the majority of my home stuff in storage down at the folks' place, get a 3 month apartment in K.C., hoping that I can find one close enough to the job...but that may be thinking a bit far ahead.

Linux sysadmin...I wonder if I'm up to that? I've been a "sysadmin" of sorts for a few years now, but my system is single-user...a good bit different from the challenges of maintaining a multi-user system, with e-mail. On the other hand, the fact that I know anything about using Linux at all puts me a step up on a lot of people these days...

Of all things, I had another job call today. Woman wanted to know if I had any previous helpdesk experience, as the job she had required six months in a call center. I had to be honest and say I didn't, and so she couldn't use me. That was at the time. Now I think I should probably have tried to B.S. her somehow. I mean, it's such a piddly requirement. Six months? That's hardly any time at all. Shouldn't my seven years of college education count for something?

The irony is that there's probably not any way I could get the kind of experience she wanted me to have. I mean, for hiring basic level helpdesk staff, they probably hire local kids where they are...kids in college, or out of college but living in their city. I'm in Springfield, I don't think anybody's going to hire me for beginning support--certainly nobody that far away, when there are unskilled laborers close at hand.

Sigh. The grind continues.

The meetup event went rather well, if with a bit of an unexpected beginning; I've posted about it over in [livejournal.com profile] meetup.
