It was an hour or so after viewing the Heroes finale that a little niggle stuck in my mind.

Apparently it's better for Nathan to sacrifice himself so that he and Peter literally go out in a blaze of glory…than it would be for Claire to kill Peter temporarily (he regenerates just like she does, and Ma Petrelli actually made a point of saying that just a few minutes earlier) to turn off the magic glowy hands of doom.

That kinda bothers me.

(Also, I wish that Christopher Eccleston had been around, as he was in the original dream sequence. Pity.)

It's partly made up for by the fact that we don't know how things shook out. It could be that neither Nathan nor Peter died up there; Peter could have shoved Nathan away partway up and gone the rest of the way on his own, and Peter of course wouldn't die, or would regenerate if he did. Man, won't Peter feel bad if he doesn't die but Nathan did?

Agreed

I had some of those same thoughts - I also wondered what was to stop Peter from flying away on his own. Though it seemed Peter might be limited to using one of his powers at a time.

Actually, I remember thinking quite a while back that it would shake out this way. It just seemed to fit the shape of their story. And while I don't necessarily think Peter is limited to using one power at a time, I do think that if he tried to use his flight power, he would have lost his tenuous grip on his radioactive-explodey power. I hate it when that happens.

I bet both are back next season.

Well, remember that the plan was for Claire to shoot him in the brain; specifically, in the spot where they both knew they were vulnerable. The last time they'd been hit in that spot, they both died, until the thing that impaled them was removed. We were talking a bullet, this time - less a matter of removing something from that spot, and more of a matter of that spot not being there anymore.

Furthermore, we had evidence from when Ted was shot that his control of the power actually severely lessened when it happened. There's a pretty good chance it wouldn't have been "Blam. No boom." but "Blam. BOOM." :D

And yeah, in true comic book fashion, we don't have bodies for either Peter or Nathan. Which basically means that the option to return either of them is definitely still around.
