A while ago, I noticed that there's a fellow who comes around regularly and scrounges through the trash dumpster by my apartment complex for aluminum cans, which he carries off in a trailer attached to his bike to recycle. We don't have the deposit/redemption that some places do, just payment by weight, but it's still enough for some people to want to go for it. Not worth my time or effort though. If I had a car, maybe things would be different. But that gave me an idea.

Lately, I set a plastic bin by the steps outside my door, and whenever I drink something aluminum-canned, I just open the door and drop the can there. Last time I saw the guy, I let him know it would be kosher for him to raid that bin, and now every so often (like just now) I step outside and notice all the cans have vanished.

So it's a kind of win-win symbiosis. I get to feel good about not trashing cans, though I would have neither the means nor the impetus to recycle them myself; the guy who does have the means and impetus to recycle them gets an easier harvest of mine.

I just think that's kinda neat.
