A webcomic artist could use your help
Feb. 8th, 2007 12:14 pmI believe I've mentioned a time or two here in the past that I read some webcomics by
syke—Alien Dice, Campus Safari, etc. Alien Dice is an interesting take on the whole "pocket monster" phenomenon that looks beyond the brain candy of the gotta-catch-'em-all craze to the ethics involved in a game where you own sentient creatures and make them fight each other—and on top of that, it adds an animé/manga-style romance. It's been running for almost six years now, and it's really good, with a lot of exciting twists and turns to the storyline. The art is absolutely amazing, too. (I did a lengthier review of it in this podcast.)
Campus Safari is a light'n'fluffy (for the most part) anthropomorphic comic; it may not be to everyone's taste, especially early on when
syke was still refining her style and it can sometimes be a little hard to tell what's going on, but it's still worth reading if you don't mind anthropomorphics. And her art has really gotten good.
How
syke manages to update multiple comics five days a week (when the donation goal was hit on the previous month) in full color is beyond me, especially since most other webcomic artists have a hard time doing just one comic in black and white. But somehow she manages.
Anyway,
syke is one of those webcomic artists whose day job is her webcomic; she supports herself on donations and merchandise sales. But at the moment, her daughter is in the emergency room with a severe infection, and it being the beginning of the month she's a little short on funds.
So, I'm asking those of you who read my journal, please consider chipping in however you can—send a few bucks in PayPal, buy some merchandise, whatever.
And check out the comics, too. :)
