So anyway, I saw my orthopedist doctor today. He took some new x-rays (one of which I posted to my Facebook wall), and told me that essentially the broken bone wasn't displaced too far, and that it was possible it would heal okay in that position—however, it was also possible that it wouldn't.

He gave me the choice of wearing a cast for six weeks and finding out where I was after that, or having surgery on the arm to put a plate and screw into it. The benefit of the operation would be that then I would not need a cast, as the bone would be fixed in place. The downside is, of course, it would be an operation.

It didn't really take too much thinking about it to decide that it would probably be best to go ahead with the operation. With my luck, I would go six weeks with the cast, and then find I still needed the operation—so might as well get it out of the way and not need a cast at all. Just from having been splinted for a week, I am already well and truly fed up enough with it that I would rather have to spend a couple of weeks in relative misery recovering from an operation than stretch the misery out to six weeks stuck in a cast on my dominant arm.

So, the plan is to go into the hospital for a day a week from Tuesday to have the plate and screw put in, and then spend Wednesday through Sunday recovering down at the parents' place. Hopefully that will be enough time that I'll be better enough to go back to work. I've already let my boss know I'm going to need to take that time off.

The only annoying thing is that it's going to eat up a significant chunk of my vacation time, which I had hoped to save for Gen-Con. But hopefully I'll build up enough vacation time between now and then that I'll still be able to make it.

In other medical news, I went ahead and turned in the claim form for my accident insurance. The person at the insurance company I spoke to on the phone today suggested that it might rate a $2000 payout. I'm not counting my chickens or anything, but that amount of money would come in very helpful about now, especially since I had to drop out of that BioKinetic medical study. I'll go ahead and call them again tomorrow morning and see when I can expect to hear back about the claim.

And that's all I have from the medical front. Will say more as it happens.
