Hospital im-patients
"Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun / If the sun don't come you get your tan by standing in the English rain" —The Beatles, "I Am the Walrus"
Well, my parents and I are sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting for our appointment. If our appointment don't come, we get…hungry and impatient.
The trip started out all right. I went to bed at about 11 last night, trusting in a double dose of melatonin to kick my sleeping schedule three or four hours earlier in one go. By and large it worked; I woke up at 5:45, beating the alarm I had set by 15 minutes, and went about the business of getting ready to head up to Columbia for my final doctor's appointment. I removed some video files from my iPod Touch and loaded Jonathan Coulton and the Beatles on; I packed my laptop and my cell phone adapter, and so on and so forth.
The folks arrived at 6:30 and we headed north, making good time up to Columbia and getting to town at about 10:00, allowing for a stop at the Camdenten Wal-Mart for a little shopping. (I found $5 DVDs of the Casshern live-action-CGI movie, Face/Off, and Bandidas.) We headed up to the MU hospital, arriving about an hour before my 11:15 appointment. Along the way, we had made arrangements for my Aunt Robbie to meet us in town for lunch.
Shortly after we got here, there was a fire alarm, and we all had to troup down three flights of stairs to stand outside in the 5-degree-F chill. Dad left to return a hospital pager we had accidentally absconded with after our last visit to get my frame removed, and we stood around until a fire truck arrived and a couple of firemen went into the building to check the alarm. A few minutes later they gave the all-clear and we headed back inside. Thinking to beat the line at the elevators, we went back up the stairs to the third floor…whereupon a nurse showed up and told us that the all-clear had been given for the first floor only and directed us to take the elevator back down. This we did…but when the door opened we heard that the overall all-clear had been given, so we rode the elevator back up again.
Due to delays before the fire alarm, on top of the fire alarm, our appointments are running about two hours late…but Aunt Robbie has apparently already gone to the restaurant. She said she is going to hang around there looking in stores and things until we can meet her. Anyway, we're probably about 30 to 45 minutes away from our appointment, so here I am updating the LJ.
Annoyingly, the Internet access seems to be somewhat intermittent, and I'm not entirely sure why. Hope it's not something wrong with this new laptop computer.
