Face the Facebook
Aug. 29th, 2009 03:43 pmAll right, I finally succumbed.
Everybody and his dog has been pestering me to get a Facebook account, and I finally went ahead and got one.
Now I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to use it for.
I post all my short-form stuff-I'm-doing via Twitter, after all, and my long-form stuff here (where "here" equals both LiveJournal and DreamWidth, via the magic of synchronized double-posting). I've enabled my LJ account to crosspost via beacon into Facebook (and in fact part of the reason I'm making this post is to see if it works). I post photos via Flickr and TwitPic, and videos via YouTube. It's nice that Facebook does all of them, but I'm already doing all of them in other places. Oh well.
I'm trying to figure out how to synchronize my Twitter posts into Facebook, too, but so far it's not going well; I can't seem to get the Facebook Twitter app to show up on my Facebook home page (it says "None Found" when I try to select "Add to Page" so maybe there's something about Facebook I don't know yet…do I have to "make a page" somehow?) and Seesmic has this problem where it cascades "connecting to facebook windows" across the screen but doesn't actually manage to get the authorization somehow. Tweetie doesn't seem to have a crosspost-to-Facebook option, and if there's a beacon thingie in Twitter itself I haven't found it yet.
Anyway, Facebook seems kind of like a fifth wheel for me at this point, though maybe I'll change my mind as I get more used to it. Certainly everybody and his dog seems to be on it now…and I do have to admit it's a heck of a lot less cluttered and ad-spammy, and more useful-seeming, than MySpace. So maybe it'll end up being useful for something after all.
Now let's see if this Facebook crossposting thing works…
Edit: Apparently, it requires the post to be made via LJ's own posting page…so there goes that idea.
