Them's the breaks
Aug. 8th, 2009 04:28 pmYesterday, I read an article in Wired that talked about how many people were jailbreaking their iPhones or iPod Touches. And for me, that was kind of the last straw. I'd been watching my friends who had done it and were happy with the results, but I hadn't wanted to do it while it looked like I might soon need to upgrade firmware. But I've got 3.0 firmware now (don't need 3.01 since my iPod won't be getting SMS messages anyway) and don't anticipate changing up for a long time. And I was getting pretty darned tired of having to close an app like Pandora or IRC to do something else.
So I went out and jailbroke. I reviewed the experience of having a jailbroken device here. As for the jailbreaking process itself, it was a lot simpler than I expected it would be. You just download a program, make sure you know where iTunes puts the firmware patch files, and go to it. It only takes about 15 minutes.
Is it going to change much of anything to be jailbroken? Well, probably not too much. I'll be able to background Pandora.com while I do other things, or keep IRC up while I go twitter. I can run the Forbidden GV Mobile app. I can play with VNC and type into my device from my desktop And, of course, I can directly copy files onto or off of my device with ssh. But I haven't really found too many other apps on Cydia that I've wanted, so by and large it will probably just be something that amuses me more than being terribly useful.
Still, I'm glad I did it.
