On Messes of Potterage
Jul. 21st, 2007 12:25 amWell, tonight I drove down to the nearby Wal-Mart supercenter, stood in line for about an hour, and got my $18 Harry Potter hardcover, along with a poster, a bookmark, and a stick-on tattoo. (I can't help but think that the Potterverse magical versions of said tattoos would be much more impressive—especially if Fred & George Weasley were the manufacturers.) I listened to the last couple chapters of the Jim Dale audiobook of Order of the Phoenix while I waited.
After that, I went over to Ziggie's and had a midnight breakfast of fried eggs, bacon, and pancakes. I chuckled a bit to notice that at least two or three other people in the cafe had their books, one of them still in costume from a party. As I left, I saw a fellow holding his book open against a table with his left hand, while eating (or, at least, making some pretense of eating) from a plate with his right. Heh.
Now, the thing is, even though I have the book, I'm not even going to let myself peek at it for another day or so. In order to enjoy it to the fullest, I need to be all caught up on at least books 5 and 6 by then. I just finished Order tonight, and so I've got all of Half-Blood Prince to listen to again. I only read it through the once, and in order to get the utmost out of it I'm going to play it through as an audiobook. The nice thing about an audiobook is that it overcomes my tendency to speed-read and miss entire passages; I have to listen to every word. For something as complicated as Harry Potter, I like that.
So, the thing is, I really hope I'll see absolutely no spoilers for the damned thing in my friends list until I get the chance to read it. No big " lives!" or " dies!" in subject lines especially.
Of course, realistically speaking, I should just cut myself off from the 'net entirely until I get the chance, I just know it.
