Today I discovered that it's possible to take historic Route 66 all the way from Springfield to St. Louis and hardly have to touch an interstate at all. Sometimes the directions get a little twisty, but a lot of the time Route 66 runs right next to I-44, so close that you have to zoom in on Google Maps to be able to tell it apart from the Interstate road. There's one major hiccup that I can see, which is just southwest of Arlington where either the road was severed by a bridge being removed or else part of the roads you need aren't even on the map (but they're there in the satellite view), but for the most part it seems to be entirely feasible.

Of course, it would probably take about ten hours instead of the five that the Interstate takes. Still, it might be fun.
