On getting laid...off
Mar. 26th, 2004 04:47 pmSo, the day started out on a somewhat off-kilter note when, just as I was waking up, I got a call from my manager asking me to come in to work half an hour early. I shrugged, got ready, and headed in.
As soon as I got there, I found there was going to be a meeting that was to be attended by everyone in the center. I first began to be alarmed when I mentioned being asked to come in early to someone else who was streaming into the meeting room with me, and she said, "That's because we're—" and made a "throat-cutting" motion. And then I heard conversations around me going on about how at least they had marketable skills and such.
Then one of the managers came in to start the meeting, and announced that due to the company needing to streamline and stuff, the Springfield customer service call center would be closing at the end of June. They would be providing job-hunting assistance, moving people to other centers or telemarketing, and so on, to try to help people keep working. They gave us an information packet, then sent us home for the day (with pay) to give us time to absorb it all.
I drove over to visit my brother (not there), my ex-aunt at the library, and my uncle (also not there), then headed up north of town to the fitness center. I had just "won" a 30-day free membership there, which turned out to be basically an excuse to give me a hard-sell...and the deal turned out to be good enough that I figured what the heck and signed up. Now I just have to get up the willpower to use it.
Headed home by way of the Crosstown barbecue, had a couple of sandwiches there, then came back to read, veg, and post this.
I'm still kind of in shock over the whole call center closing thing. Not sure what to think about it...right now, don't even want to think about it...hopefully this will lead to me getting a better position, but it's going to require work on my part.
