Home Sick, Taxing and Working
Feb. 3rd, 2004 08:05 pmWell, I'm still home, still sickish. The throat seems a little better...I'll see how much better when it comes time to go in for work tomorrow. Due to having six hours of sick leave left, I'll have to work two hours, then I can take the rest of the day to recuperate further and hope I'm all better by the next day. As for Thursday...well, my supervisor tells me that if the weather is bad enough that I (say that I) can't get in I'll be able to use a vacation day, otherwise I'll get non-paid and a warning. I haven't had any warnings yet from work so one or two shouldn't hurt me...and I'm heartened by hearing that it's supposed to snow tomorrow night.
Something unexpected—or that I should have expected but didn't—came in the mail today...another 1098E form, reporting interest paid on student loans for tax purposes, from my other loan guarantor. I'd thought I was only going to get the one, so I went ahead and e-filed a couple weeks ago. However, this new form, when I plugged it into TaxCut, would give me $60 more on my refund—nothing to sneeze at. (Well, it would have been nothing to sneeze at, but since I have this darned cold, I sneezed anyway.) It took me a couple of hours of fiddling around, but I finally managed to get a 1040X Amended Tax Return filled out properly...and then I fiddled with my Windows computer so that I could print it out to a PostScript file, copied that over to my OSX 10.2 Powerbook and ran it through a PS-to-PDF converter...and then rebooted to OS 9 so that I could print it out through the archaic DeskWriter printer I have that OS X doesn't support. It's in the envelope with a stamp on it right now, waiting to be sent in.
Funny how things happen...not long after my folks called me up today to hassle me about why I hadn't been looking for a better job yet (and, because of my throat, I couldn't really say much in response), I got a posting in the mail pointing me to a work-at-home job listing. Now, most of these things are scams that want to get you to pay $25 for a "work-at-home kit" or some such...but on reading through this one, it came off as refreshingly legit-seeming. No fees or anything required, etc. etc. And while I don't necessarily believe the bushwah about $15 an hour or more, the chance to work at home on the phone at whatever times I wished to would give me a nice chance to pick up a few extra bucks in evenings or on weekends. So I went ahead and applied, which consisted of answering a few questions then calling in to a voice recorder and reading a marketing spiel off of a script. (Despite my throat pain, I was able to do it okay...perhaps I really am getting better.) That sort of thing is one of my great strengths, and it'll be interesting to see if they want me. (If they do, I'll have to go ahead and spring for getting a landline phone put in...but I've kind of been hoping for an excuse to do that anyway.) And it certainly didn't cost me anything to send in the application, so what the heck. If it all works out well, I'll be able to earn a little extra cash to ease the student loan and credit card debt pain.
