Working on cleaning up my room this weekend, since I'm going to be elsewhere next weekend and need it to look reasonably decent for the neighbors who're going to come in and take care of my cat.

Watched a couple of random fansubbed anime courtesy of AnimeSuki. Bouken Youki Pluster World seems like another Pokemon/Digimon clone...not much to attract me to it. Gunslinger Girl looks interesting, though a bit slow to start. Something about a secret police agency that uses young girls as assassins. I may snag another ep or two when it becomes available, but I don't plan to keep it.

What else to report...oh, yes, the neighbors. I've got some rather odd new neighbors. I guess you could call them "literary white trash." A bit younger than I am...heavy drinkers, heavy smokers, heavy cussers...but also heavy readers. They've got about half a dozen bookshelves in their apartment, and the one I spoke to said he's largely into the beat writers, like Kerouac. They've got a green plastic turtle toddler wading pool outside their door...with gravel and a whole bunch of coins in it. They say it's their "wishing well" and that funds generated thereupon are to be used solely for beer.

They're the kind of people that the song "I've Got Friends in Low Places" are talking about. It's funny...you don't tend to associate folks like that with reading, but I've seen the bookshelves and talked Tom Robbins books with them...so there you go.

Anyway, they were having a barbecue last night, and they invited me to eat with them, so I went out and got some chips and beer to share. Probably paid more in beer than the food was worth, but it paid off in terms of making friends. I'm not entirely sure they're the type of person my folks would want me being friends with—at one point during the barbecue, they congregated in the apartment of one of their number to watch part of Debbie Does Dallas (I stayed outside with my laptop since I wasn't really interested), and at another point they were talking proudly about the windchimes they'd stolen from someone's house nearby and hung outside their door—but they're easy-going enough that I can get along with them...and I think I'd rather be friends with them than enemies.

Well, need to fold the laundry, do the dishes, and do more tidying, then reboot to Windows and watch some DVDs I've kept for entirely too long. Hope to write again soon.

[President] Bush told his senior aides Tuesday that he "didn't want to see any stories" quoting unnamed administration officials in the media anymore, and that if he did, there would be consequences, said a senior administration official who asked that his name not be used.
