My life seems to thrive on coincidence. As we were moving me out of my place last week, I met one of the new neighbors. Tallish fellow from the former Czechoslovakia, by way of Germany. He's got his Master's degree and is planning to apply to an Ivy League law school sometime next year, so he's studying to get ready for it. Anyway, he'd moved into one of the apartments in the same building as my old one to be close to the SMSU campus.

As it happens, this fellow also works at MCI. And he buttonholed me the other day about wanting to come over and see my place, in the hope that the same landlord might have another like it. He finally managed to do it last night.

The odd thing is, my next door neighbors are moving out in a couple of days. And while I'm not really sure I want him as a neighbor—he's very nice, but he's also very talkative and outgoing, and I'm very...well...not; he has this habit of buttonholing me while I'm on the computers at break and making conversation, asking me a whole bunch of questions that I'm too distracted by the Internet to answer, and I'm too distracted by him to focus on the Internet, and it grates on me—my helpful nature forced me to reveal this fact to him, and he seemed quite interested.

This morning, I was woken by the someone pouring marbles out of a barrel outside, or at least that was what it sounded like. Heavy weather again. I hope that girl who was my neighbor at the old place for a week or so got through it okay.

I had the disconcerting experience of not being able to find Gumdrop this morning. I found myself wondering if maybe she could have gotten outside somehow while I was looking at the storm—you wouldn't think a cat that big could manage to hide in four rooms and a bathroom. So I searched all through all the rooms trying to find where she was, and ended up rattling the catfood bag to get her to come out. It turned out she was under my bed; I'll have to look more closely there next time.

Just about ready to head off to work. I hope I can remember to stop at the doughnut shop on the way down this time. I've been intending to eat breakfast there for the last two days, as it's right on my way, but somehow I get so deeply into thinking and introspection that I always miss the turn until it's too late, and end up having to scrabble for food down at the workplace.

Got a few more boxes of books and things cleared out, and the bookshelf mostly populated. Tonight I'll look into organizing it more, and seeing what to do about some of the boxes full of bathroom kipple. It sure is nice to have a floor lamp.

Went by Kmart today and bought one of those fits-over-your-toilet shelf thingies. My brother Aaron, who came over to replace the paper towel holder for me, put it together, but we ran into a slight problem: I have high ceilings. Very high ceilings. 10.5 foot high ceilings, if my measurements are accurate. If I stand with my feet flat and raise my arm all the way up in the air, I can't quite touch it. Since the toilet shelf thing is supposed to brace itself against floor and ceiling to stay snug in place, this has led to a bit of a problem. Apparently it wasn't made for ceilings of such a great height. Aaron'll bring over some 2x4s to stick under it to help brace it later on.

On the other hand, it is nice that the high ceiling makes the place feel so roomy...

And another thing: while Aaron was over here, he helped show me how to use the dishwasher that came with the place. So far, it seems to be working fine. It's funny, I had thought of dishwashers as being things that were a part of your counter and connected to the wall and stuff...but this dishwasher is a portable model; it has a little hose and socket that you pull out of it and attach to a quick-release thing on the faucet. Then turn the faucet on, put the detergent in, and watch it go. Funky. It's kinda neat watching the water drain out into the sink from the thing attached to the faucet.

Now I should only rarely ever have to handwash dishes again! Yay!
