Thrown onto the wagon

robotech_masterSo here I am in BioKinetic again, waiting for breakfast, trying to shake off the effects of only about five and a half hours of sleep. To be expected, I suppose. This medical study is being held in one of the old dorms, which means the bunkroom is huge, and the bigger the bunkroom, the more likely there are to be a bunch of people who don't want to have the lights off until the absolute last moment.
On the bright side, I get breakfast today. That's not always the case for Saturday mornings on BioKinetic medical studies.
Overall, this is going to be one of the more annoying medical studies I've ever been on, in part because there are a large number of return checkins at 6:30 in the morning, but mainly because I'm helping them comparison-test blood availability of various formulations of Disulfiram, a fun little drug that interferes with the body's ability to process alcohol, producing extreme hangover-like symptoms upon the consumption of the slightest amount. It's used as a treatment for alcoholics, denying them the ability to drink. And it sticks around in the bloodstream for quite some time.
So, between the length of the study and the length of time I'll have it in my bloodstream, I'm looking forward to having my next beer or martini in…early August, I estimate. But I'm getting $1400 for this in late July, and that's going to help me out a lot.
And it's not like I'm an alcoholic or anything. I can get by without booze; there's plenty of other tasty stuff in the world. Heck, I went 21 years without drinking (mostly), I can go three months easily.
In the thankfulness-for-small-favors department, it turns out that the weekend of my 20th high school reunion is one of the weekends that is not taken up by the study, so I'll at least be able to see my old classmates. I just won't be able to drink…no matter how much I might find myself wanting to by the end of it. :P
