The Avatar experience
Dec. 19th, 2009 10:20 pmReally cold today! Brrr.
Went out to see Avatar today. My complete non-spoiler thoughts on it are in my essay journal. Briefly: it may be a rehash of Dances with Wolves meets The Last Samurai, but the hyper-real world Cameron has created transcends any of the story's failings.
More than possibly any other movie ever, this is the film to see—to experience—in 3D on a big screen. On the small screen in 2D, it will just be Yet Another Dances with Wolves Clone.
Now I find myself wondering what movie to see when my parents come up on Christmas Day. I had been thinking about seeing Sherlock Holmes, since I really liked Downey Jr. in Iron Man and that's the only Downey movie available until May's Iron Man 2. But now I think maybe my folks might enjoy Avatar, and maybe I should watch it one more time before it disappears from the 3D screens too.
Not much else has happened today apart from that. I'm pretty tired. Maybe I'll go to bed soon.
