Today I went down to the IU Vision Center on Indiana Avenue for an eye exam under my insurance. It's a great little building, located literally right on the edge of the Canal Walk, so you could look out the window and see a great view of the canal and the Fresco Cafe right across the way.

I believe my examiner was a student at IU's optometry school, which was fine by me. They've got to learn somehow, right? She gave me an excellent, thorough examination, including dilating my eyes and checking for glaucoma (great news! They don't have to blow air into your eyes to do it anymore; they can just put yellow dye in your eyes and then shine a blue light in to use the green combination to check the pressure), and determined my prescription had changed considerably over the last few years since my previous prescription.

We went over the various options and how much my insurance covered, and I picked out what I wanted—polycarbonate bifocals with an extra scratch-resistance coating. Happily, the frames I thought looked nicest overall were also the least expensive. (I like when that happens.) It looked like, all in all, the insurance will cover about half the cost of the glasses. We were all ready to place the order, except…

When she was checking me after the dilation, she noticed a wider variance between the dilated and non-dilated examinations than she had expected, so she called in a mentor to double-check the results. Given that the results were a bit unusual, they wanted me to come back in two weeks for an un-dilated re-check just to double-check that they'd gotten everything right before they sent off the order for the lenses.

Then they gave me a pair of roll-up wrap-around sunglasses (that used friction to cling to my face) to protect my eyes—

The optometrist gave me these cool wrap-around shades to get home with.

—and sent me on home. (I later found the sunglasses on Amazon—they're pretty inexpensive, actually, and definitely handy. Maybe I should order a batch.)

Anyway, that's where I am.

It'll be interesting to have real glasses again. I haven't really been able to wear the ones from several years ago because they've got a big old unsightly scratched-up spot in the middle of one lens, and from what the eye doctor found my prescription has changed so much since then than they probably wouldn't do me much good anyway. My eyes have actually gotten better since then; I gather I'm at the age where that sort of thing happens. But they've also gotten worse at close-in vision; I'm at that age, too. So the bifocals. It'll be interesting having bifocals again, but I expect I'll get used to them.
