Tuesday evening back-and-forthing
Sep. 11th, 2008 09:25 amDid up another couple of articles for TeleRead: a review of the iPod Touch's music playing abilities (and comparison of old vs. new), and a review of the ultra-cheap Borgvik remote control (which no Touch owner should be without).
Had an "interesting" Tuesday evening. Left work a little early to head across town to the salvage grocery on Kearney west of Kansas so I could get there before it closed. Picked up an interesting assortment of stuff, then headed home. Got home, unloaded the groceries…then turned around and headed right back all the way across town to the library center on Kansas north of Kearney for the Harry Potter meetup.
Except…the Harry Potter meetup never materialized (or should I say "apparated"). Nobody was there, and the phone number listed on the meetup website did not work. When I checked the meetup website, it claimed the meetup was on for tonight—but when I checked with the librarian, it turned out that the room had been scheduled for next week. Whoops.
In the interest of not having the trip be a total loss, I headed up to the nearby Big Lots to check their $3 DVDs, and found a grail I'd been after for a while, plus a couple of other decent finds. The grail in question was De-Lovely, the Cole Porter bio starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd. I'd seen about the first half hour of it at the medical study clinic—but some annoyed fellows changed it out when it got to the scene with Cole Porter in bed with his boyfriend.
(Checking the Internet Movie Database after noticing his name on the soundtrack, I was interested to see that John Barrowman has a brief appearance and musical duet with Kline on "Night and Day"—and his character name is "Jack". Well, I guess we know what (and maybe even who) Captain Jack Harkness was doing between the wars now.)
The decent finds were the Superbit edition of Johnny Mnemonic (yes, I know, $3 might be too much for that movie—but on the other hand, Superbit!) and the first DVD of SD Gundam.
Then I hit Wal-Mart for some cat food, and headed back home again.
Did take some interesting photos along the way. Here's one of a fairly colorful beverage, and the most redundant road sign I have ever seen. I noticed a couple of stray cats behind the Braum's restaurant, but they retreated when I tried to approach.
