I'm so sorry. Having lost two cats in the last eighteen months, and had so many of my LJ and real life friends (and a couple of enemies) lose cats in the same period, it almost seems as there's a sudden epidemic of cat deaths, though I'm sure this is not the case.
I am sure you gave Gumdrop a great life. May her memory stay with you always, however many cats own you.
