I've got a little Liszt…
Feb. 25th, 2008 10:32 pmHere are a couple of great old-time cartoons, both from 1946, and both featuring one of the greatest piano melodies of all time—Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
The odd thing is, they came out within just a few weeks of each other, which led to Warner and Hanna-Barbera accusing each other of plagiarism. But it's much more likely that it was simply coincidental that both studios decided to make shorts based on that particular song at that particular time, and it makes sense that the gags that the musical passages would suggest to each would end up being similar. It's such a picturesque piece, after all.
Anyway, here are our contenders:
Bugs Bunny…
versus Tom and Jerry. (This one actually won the 1946 Oscar for Best Animated Short.)
