Spoiler-free review: Not bad, if a little formulaic. Of course, for one such as me, by this time I'd be thrilled at just about any new Who—and unlike some on my friends list, I rather like Tennant's Doctor.

Of course, what it's formulaic of is not so much Doctor Who (well, not entirely; upon reflection, it does rather shamelessly lift the villain's motivation, methods, and even physique from "The End of the World") as it is disaster movies in general. I'm thinking of things like Poseidon Adventure, or a volcano movie I saw on cable TV somewhere in the distant past. You know how it is. Sympathetic characters are introduced for no other reason than to get offed about halfway through the picture. And the minute Kylie Minogue's character expressed a desire to travel with the Doctor, I knew her fate was (deadlock) sealed. I do have to give a nod to the clever orchestration of the first couple of minutes, where they rather sardonically played on what the audience has been expecting ever since seeing that Titanic life preserver at the end of the last season.

The trailers for the coming season looked very interesting. I wonder what the odds are Tennant moves on at the end of this one?

From what I understand, 2009 will be a 'rest year' for the series, with three specials (with David Tennant) instead of a standard series. There is a fifth series being planned for 2010, though no word on Tennant's return that I could find.

And I've always found Tennant's Who to be a lot of fun, without sacrificing the necessary dramatic elements. I hope he stays with it.
