Springfield, MO: Picnic at the End of the Universe, this Sunday

A little get-together that a friend of mine organized in April is repeating this weekend, rain or shine: Sunday, October 14th in Phelps Grove Park, the Picnic at the End of the Universe. It's a pot-luck-style picnic/get-together for local area SF/fantasy/gamer/geek types. Bring a dish, your own lunch, both, or neither (but leave anything alcoholic at home), and meet other like-minded or differently-minded-in-similar-ways people. There will be games, activities, discussions, and other stuff. If you're in the area, come check it out. It'll be held rain or shine; they rented the covered table area. Maybe I'll see you there?

Why is there a prohibition of alcohol?

Because the city parks department says so, party-poopers that they are.

How boring of them. I bet they don't prohibit smoking or Nascar, equally damaging to those who indulge, and to those around them.

This may be so, but I don't think people who smoke a lot are as apt to make public nuisances of themselves under the influence of nicotine.

Couldn't say about NASCAR though.

Smoking in public is more of a direct nuisance than drinking. Even in an outdoor venue.
