NASFIC, Day One
Aug. 3rd, 2007 08:42 pmGot up at about 6 a.m. this morning; headed across town to BioKinetic to give a blood sample, then back home, returning at about 7:45. At 8:00, Sandy and family arrived to pick me up for the St. Louis trip.
We stopped at two tourism centers along the way: one in Fort Leonard Wood, the other a little farther along. We got to the convention center about 1:00 p.m., in time for me to get some books autographed by John Hemry (a hasty last minute addition to my knapsack, as I'd only just learned he was at the con), then catch the last half of the coffeeklatch with P.C. Hodgell, then attend a writing panel with various people including Elizabeth Moon. I greeted Ms. Moon after the panel, and hastily dashed to the dealer room to snag a book for her to autograph (I hadn't realized she'd be here, so I didn't bring anything). I also asked her about the possibility of an interview at some point for my podcast, The Biblio File
After that, I snagged a copy of an Eric Flint book, attended a panel on writing workshops with him on it, and got him to autograph it. I also approached him about the idea of an interview, and got his email address.
After that, I attended a coffeeklatch with Peter S. Beagle, and had him autograph a bunch of books for me, then headed to meet Connor Cochran at their dealer table.
I went down and snagged some color printouts of commission sheets I'd made up for characters at the con HQ, and used them to commission some character art. Not much; I was a bit overbudget already, and not many artists there actually seemed to be doing commissions. Then I decided to see about getting a bus back to near where my cousins Roy and Rhonda lived.
That was when I discovered that the bus Roy and Rhonda had researched for me to take, #18, did not run by the convention center--and the one that did run by the center and would take me downtown to meet it had stopped running an hour before. Oops.
Luckily, Peter S. Beagle and Connor Cochran came to my rescue; they were heading to their hotel in west St. Louis anyway, and offered to drop me off. So we set off on an expedition westward. The instructions I had from Roy and Rhonda said to "travel west on I-44" so I assumed that meant they were giving me directions from the convention center. So we got on I-44 and headed west. And completely did not see the exit.
Finally I called Roy and Rhonda to ask about those directions. They advised us to get off I-44 and come back east. Apparently the directions had assumed I was coming from Springfield, and they had in fact meant "their other west." Luckily, I had called at exactly the right time, and the right exit was right there. It still took some time to get here; I hope that I didn't make Connor and Peter late for their phone meeting they needed to take part in from the hotel.
Anyway, here I am at Roy and Rhonda's. I'm going to go ahead and take a shower then get in bed, and head back to the convention as soon as I can tomorrow morning. It'll be better without a heavy bag full of stuff to tote around; I've taken care of all the books I needed autographed, except one or two.
What a tiring day. Tomorrow should be better.
