They say it's your birthday…happy birthday to you

Wow. I've just had a great evening.

This morning, I had emailed my new friend Sandy asking how he was doing—he's been feeling poorly over the last couple of weeks; adverse reaction to antibiotics. I happened to mention it was my 34th birthday today, just because.

A little later, he called me, asking what I was doing to celebrate it. Oh, not much, I mumbled, said something about maybe going down to Planet Sub and redeeming my yearly birthday coupon for a free sandwich. "That's no way to spend a birthday," he said. "Why don't you come over and have dinner with me?" He suggested I bring my DVD of Porco Rosso and we could watch that afterward.

So this evening I went over and we ate—me, Sandy, his wife Crissy, their two-year-old daughter Emma, and Crissy's parents who live just a few houses up the street. We had pseudo-calzones that Sandy whipped up out of some leftovers and biscuit dough, followed by a birthday cake topped with SD-Gundam figures and pocky. Then Sandy, Emma, and I watched the movie, which we all quite enjoyed even if the dub was a little off in places.

After that, Sandy drove me home, and he and Emma came in and I showed them a little of Panda, Go Panda and then lent it to them to watch the rest at home as it was getting late.

Apart from that, I had birthday calls today from my parents, my brothers Aaron and Alex, and an old friend Pearson "Doc" Mui, who I hadn't heard from in quite some time. All things considered, it's been a lot better birthday than any other one I've had recently. And I've still got my Mom and Dad coming up for lunch on Sunday to look forward to as well.
