The mention of using a kerosene heater to warm his room up immediately triggered alarms for me - those things can put out tremendous amounts of carbon monoxide when used in enclosed places, and I have had acquaintances who died from their use in well-sealed tents and garages, so I called him this morning to find out how he's doing and if he's dead yet.
He was not dead, and was preparing to go to the folk's place, a return to the bosom of the family which, being something like a farm, has facilities for dealing with the loss of power.
His cat will remain behind with plenteous food and water and fresh box.
He leaves his taps running a trickle so they shouldn't freeze. Perhaps his neighbors will be equally intelligent.
