Doctor Who thoughts

I recorded a half-hour segment with my thoughts on the Torchwood season, the Doctor Who Christmas episode, and the first episode of Sarah Jane Adventures for the new split-off RDF Underground Tardiscast podcast—the podcaster of RDF Underground has decided to split his Doctor Who content off from his Robotech content and make two separate podcasts. The episode should be out in the next day or so and you can hear my griping at length.

To sum up: Torchwood had a number of good episodes, a number of mediocre episodes, and a handful of stinkers (especially the finale, which didn't make any sense at all). On the whole it was a decent show, and hopefully the next season will improve from where this one left off. Runaway Bride was mediocre (a bit too silly for my taste), and the first Sarah Jane Adventure episode was a bit juvenile but showed promise.

So it should be, as a children's programme.

And yet, Doctor Who isn't (usually), and it's a "children's program" too. Funny how that goes.

No, no, no.

You have to understand BBCspeak.

Dr Who is and always has been what is known as a "family programme", which means it is suitable to be watched by most of the family, with an advisory for very young children. It is broadcast at 7pm, well outside what would be normally the childrens' slots.

The Sarah Jane Adventures are being specifically made for children, and are being made by and will be broadcast on the BBC's children's channel, CBBC. Russel T Davies started his writing career with a similar programme, made for children and broadcast in what used to be called the "Children's Hour", called Dark Season and followed it with another called Century Falls. Other CBBC stuff recently includes the excellent Shoebox Zoo.

Other children's TV made by the Beeb includes adaptions of Joan Aiken, Margaret Mahy and Diana Wynne Jones, all broadcast in the children's slots between 4:30 and 5:40pm.
