Someone got a response back from Manga Video about the opening titles of Castle of Cagliostro being messed up.
Thank you for your interest in Manga and one of our favorite titles, "Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro". Please be advised that the opening credits were provided in English by the Production Company in Japan and this is how they wanted us to represent their team, for everyone to read who worked on the show. In addition, they had provided us with a remastered 16x9 anamorphic master, which if you compare with our original release, is far superior.

We work really hard at Manga to try and listen to the fans' concerns and appreciate your feedback, but we must also listen to our licensors and how they want their film and team represented.

We're disappointed to hear you are reluctant to buy our titles going forward, as we do try our best to improve with every release. This is why we don't put out as many titles, as we focus on quality, not quantity. Our dubs and subtitles are triple-checked and are reviewed very well by our fans and publications. We are a small team of less then 10 people at our label, so we are not the machine that many of our competitors are.

We sincerely hope you change your mind and hope you enjoy the program and the work we've done to try and bring some added value to a fan favorite.
So it's apparently another one of those cases of the original anime creator not giving a damn how their product looks outside of Japan, since they didn't make it with those damn gaijin in mind to begin with. No, far more important than maintaining the integrity of the original work is making sure that all the names are on it right at the beginning!

And that being the case, getting them to "fix" it is unlikely in the extreme.

Grumble.

Some folks on rec.arts.anime.misc have made noises about wanting to master a new burnable version of the DVD for themselves, using the Japanese audio, video, and English language (Macek) dub from the Japanese version, adding the English language (Manga) dub and subtitles from the American version, and my commentary track too. (I must admit I'm flattered.) I doubt it will happen (though there's nothing really preventing it; they'd just need to use the proper DVD editing software and have copies of both discs), but it's a nice pipe dream.
