Well, I heard some great news last night. Turns out that Ludlow Music doesn't own the rights to "This Land is Your Land" the way they thought they did—so the JibJab parody is free and clear. I put the complete details in a post on, that's right, my essay journal. I think it's one of my best posts yet; it's certainly one of my longest. Enjoy.

Unfortunately, the result of that incident is that all the other music-owning outfits will redouble their efforts to make sure that none of their songs ever slip out of copyright.
I can see the Powerpoint presentations going on now: "Here's a projection of what LudLow lost by their neglect; and here's a projection of what we could lose. Notice how it is vastly smaller than the costs of lobbying Congress to have copyrights extended....."

And what are they gonna do? Jump in a time machine to go back in time and make sure that they really were the first to publish? Bah. Ludlow's "neglect" happened 48 years ago. I doubt the people responsible are even still alive, much less still with the company.
