Weekend & 24 thoughts
Feb. 22nd, 2004 01:42 amWell, somewhere people are watching anime and playing roleplaying games and things and drinking caffeinated beverages to stay up late into the night. But there is no joy in Mudville, Mighty Casey has struck out. Or something like that. I decided to skip VisionCon entirely after all and stayed home to play with my new DVD burner and watch TV and stuff. I did make a brief pass by last night, nervously looking around for con security, but didn't really see anyone I knew.
I've had a bit of fun burning things with the new DVD burner. It's amazing how darned fast it is...and it works! I can even burn audio CDs from iTunes. I'm in the process of downloading the ISOs for Baen books for which I didn't have a CD burner handy when they came out...but the download process is slow; they may not even be done by tomorrow.
It's been kind of a lazy Saturday; I've been watching some of the episodes of the latest season of 24 I've downloaded. Wow. More twisty turns than an Ozarks country road...including some new twists on old plot types from prior seasons. Just when you think, "Oh, that's just like when..." and draw parallels...boom, they change it all around on you. More I dare not say, for fear of spoilage.
Well, okay, a few specific comments under the cut. If you haven't yet seen this season and plan to, don't read it.
Not only is Kim Bauer still stupid ("Hey, Chase, there's a virus threat on, the President is in town, and everybody's running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Golly, wouldn't today be a great day to tell Dad we're seeing each other?") but the stupidity seems to have spread to just about everyone else in sight. She and her co-worker Adam are squabbling like little kids, Jack and Chase are squabbling like little kids, President Palmer lets himself be swayed from his moral center by his brother (who is altogether too slick for Palmer's own good, IMO), J. Random Teen Schmuck gets conned into bringing drugs over the border, Jack's doing dope, and there's enough miscommunication or lack of communication going on to do Shakespeare proud. Of course, some or all of these things have changed as the season's gone one...
As many traitors as there seem to be inside CTU, they really need to find a new staffing agency.
Oh, look! Unsavory Mexican stereotypes! (Of course, whenever you make someone of any other nationality a villain, there you go with an unsavory [nationalist] stereotype...)
Whole lotta headshots going on.
Ryan Chappelle is still a dick with about three feet of lead pipe stuck up his rear end. Nice to see some things never change.
Funny how certain CTU agents can sprain their ankles or get shot in the neck, go through surgery, and be back at CTU within a few hours...
And yet, it's still a great show. They're obviously setting Chase up to be the "new Jack Bauer," as Sutherland has apparently indicated he'll be leaving the show after this season. I wish him luck, but Chase's actor has neither the personality nor the screen presence of Kiefer Sutherland, and I predict the show will dive right into the toilet without Kiefer as the anchor. I wonder if they'll kill him off at the end? I wonder if he'll ever get to resolve things with his wife's killer? They certainly left that open in the last season.
