Interesting thing someone discovered on the first disc of the R1 DVD of Castle in the Sky...one of the video files, VOB_6_1, contains content that doesn't show up on any of the disc's menus. After about 5 minutes of Japanese trailers, there is a 20 minute Japanese TV documentary on the making of the movie. No subtitles, unfortunately. My guess is that it was a work in progress to be included as an extra, they were not able to complete it for some reason, and somehow it wasn't deleted from the disc materials when the master was cut. Anyway, it's a nice little bonus gift for those who can access and understand it.

And by the way, don't let this happen to you.

Maybe it is an Easter Egg with a hidden link somewhere.

No, the fellow who found it said that the DVD ripping program he'd used to discover it told him in no uncertain terms that it had found a video file that wasn't referenced by any of the menus on the disc. No "easter egg" this, it's more like pirate booty that you need a metal detector or a treasure map to find, and have to excavate once you do.

The really funny thing...

...is that the discussion I started on this in r.a.a.misc immediately turned to a semantical argument over what an easter egg was and whether this could be considered one. I haven't seen one comment regarding the content of the thing.

USENET discussion remains consistent at its usual level, film at eleven.
