Recent Life In Recap
Oct. 17th, 2003 01:00 amJust a brief entry, as I shouldn't let myself get too far out of the habit.
Went out to see Kill Bill yesterday. Wow...nothing like a Quentin Tarantino movie to get the ol' blood pumping...not to mention spraying all over everywhere. An excellent martial arts splatterfest with homages all the way through to vintage kung fu and samurai movies and animé. I can hardly wait 'til part two comes out in February. I wonder if my Dad would enjoy it? He likes martial arts films in general, but I suspect he might find the 450 gallons of fake blood used in the production of the film just a little off-putting. Still...perhaps in February I might lure him up for a double-feature of the entire film. Have to see.
I also picked up The Matrix Reloaded on DVD. Mildly annoyed that no audio commentary was included with this one (I guess they're saving it for a special edition box set after the third flick comes out); haven't had time to go into any of the other special features. Well, except the MTV Movie Awards spoof on disc 2; that was amusing.
At work lately, I've been alternating between reading library books and reading some manga that one of my co-workers has brought in. I've read the first eight volumes (all that's currently available) of Initial D and have to admit that it's a pretty decent story...though the art often leaves a great deal to be desired. I've seen better faces drawn by fourth graders. And yet, the cars are almost photographically rendered.
I've been spending the last few days trying to get this old HP DeskWriter 560C printer working with my laptop, and I've just about given it up. I managed to compile the serial print application in OS X, but I just can't seem to get the flow control working, and the fellow who was helping me hasn't responded lately. All may not be lost, though: one of my net friends has found an old HP DeskJet 300 printer, which should hook up to my PC via parallel, that he's going to be sending to me. I hope it works.
Today at work, I learned that we're no longer going to be goaled on Average Handling Time/Number of Calls Handled in regards to our bonus incentive money. This is a good thing because, as our calls have been running about 60% to 80% transfers out ("I'm sorry, Mr. Customer, but I'm in the Small Business Department, and you need the Residential Department"), our average call handling time has been unnaturally low the last few months. And the way the goaling system is set up, if you blow away your goal, you're rewarded in the next cycle with an even lower one. By now, our AHT goal is on the order of 150 seconds...which is impossible to attain if you get even one long call. So, now the determinants are going to be quality rating and compliance to shift schedule. At least until the end of the month, when our department officially ceases to exist and we get folded into new shifts.
Well, this entry's turned out to be longer than I intended...but at least I've caught up on most of the interesting things that have happened to me lately. Onward and upward! (Or downward, to bed...)

Date: 2003-10-17 07:10 am (UTC)Of course, the cars are the real stars of the manga, and thus warrant that extra detail. The characters are just added as an afterthought and thus can be represented by a few squiggly lines.
