Laptop working; Family visit; Cat & Vet
Aug. 20th, 2003 07:44 pmIt's been a long, full, busy weekend/week, and it'd be hard to try to remember enough to recap what-all happened, so I'll just hit the high points.
I got my laptop back working again, thanks to Disk Warrior. I ended up having to reinstall OS 9 and 10 from scratch, more or less, but it worked out okay in the end. I'm still planning to get a new hard drive for it at some point when my budget can afford it. In the mean time, I'll just try to get into the habit of backing important stuff off of it to the hard drive of my main computer from time to time.
I managed to get Starcraft working on the laptop, too. The reason it wouldn't work was one of those PEBKAC errors—Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair. The instructions for how to install it mentioned both the Starcraft folder, and the Starcraft Files folder within the Starcraft folder, and I was copying the files into the wrong one. :P
On Sunday, I headed down to visit Mom & Dad, for Dad's birthday. I was going to go to the church and attend the service where they joined the church. In order that I might get there in time, Dad gave me some new directions for another method of getting to the church. And I thought that would be fine, I could get there in plenty of time...except that I didn't quite allow myself enough time, and also I took a wrong turn or three on my way to it. You see, there's one freeway that loops around the south side of Springfield, called James River Expressway, that, for as long as I drove it, always petered out at a certain point on the west part of town, and an exit off that point led onto the road I needed to be on. So I was driving along, waiting for the road to end...only the end was different than I had expected. There had been some road work since the last time I had gone out that far. I thought they'd just adjusted the exit, but it turned out that they'd extended the road to exit to another highway altogether. To make a long story short, I was about 15 minutes late to the service. Oh well.
I presented my Dad with a couple of birthday presents (DVDs of The Corruptor and BMW's The Hire) and we watched a couple of movies (Payback and Equilibrium). A good time was had by all.
Over the last few days, my apartment has been slowly taken over by fleas, until it reached the point where I couldn't sit at my computer (where the cat liked to lie around) anymore without practically having my feet gnawed off at the ankles. Today, I had determined to do something about that. (Actually, I'd determined to do it on Saturday or Sunday, but somehow the weekend just got too busy for me to get around to it.) I was going to give Gumdrop a flea bath, and bug-bomb the apartment.
As I was giving my poor kitty the flea bath, I noticed for the first time how incredibly thin she had gotten. A visiting friend had remarked on it, but I hadn't thought much of it at the time. Actually, Gumdrop's appetite has been off for the last couple of weeks. I had thought it was just a reaction to the brand of cat food, but it was going a lot farther than it should have. So, while the bug bombs were bombing, I headed down to a vet and had her examined. The vet did a test for feline leukemia (negative) and examined her, and pronounced that she was anemic, and it was probably due to all the fleas (which the bath, it turned out, didn't entirely eliminate). He prescribed a vitamin supplement, anti-flea pills for a couple of days (until the oils on her hair returned after the bath), and Frontline squeeze-on flea-icide for after that. He also suggested using a region spray (the brand he recommended was "Vet-Ken" but I couldn't find that either at Pet Warehouse or PetSmart) which would be more effective than a bug-bomb. I ended up getting some Spectracide anti-flea spray and applying it; I hope it works effectively.
The vet also told me that Gumdrop was substantially older than I thought she was; he used the term "senior citizen" and suggested she was probably 12 years old or more. And here I'd thought she was more like four or five.
She seems to be doing okay now. I hope her appetite returns soon.
At any rate, today's been a long day full of much running around, and I'm exhausted. I'm just gonna kick back, have a beer, maybe play some Starcraft...
