The visit from Travis has gone rather well. Full details after the LJ-cut.

I managed to get out of work about an hour early on Friday night, and arrived home not long after Travis got here. He would have been here earlier, except that some of the instructions I gave him were not perhaps quite as clear as they should have been. After I got in, he set up the wireless/Ethernet router that he purchased for me, we got on the net for a bit, and then we spent a bit of time watching various videos or parts of videos. Mainly, the one video that we got to watch in its entirety was the first episode of Read or Die. I quite enjoyed it, and will definitely be watching more of it as I have the chance.

Travis brought me down some Bryant's BBQ & sauce, which made a good late supper for me. Shortly after all this was over, we went to bed.

The next morning, we were woken slightly before we intended to be as I'd forgotten to turn down the speakers on the computer before I went to bed, and when my VCR kicked in to record TMNT, it blared through the house. But it wasn't that much earlier than we'd intended, so it was all right. Breakfast was a loaf of apple-cinnamon machine-bread, then we set out at about noon on a Great Adventure: I took Travis to every used bookstore in town of which I know, as well as Best Buy and Bass Pro. Along the way, at Travis's suggestion, we stopped in at a Chinese Mongolian barbecue buffet near my house for lunch. It was quite good, even if I'm not quite experienced with that kind of buffet yet. My idea of eating there was to pile everything they had to offer on a plate and let them stir-fry it all, whereas Travis feels it best to take smaller portions of various combinations.

Along the way, we bought various used books, recommended books to each other, and then picked up some DVDs at Best Buy. I got the Animatrix and Die Another Day, both of which were on sale for $15 (from $20), though I didn't actually discover this until I was payinhg for them. It was a nice surprise. So, after we got home, we took turns showing each other various episodes of anime. I got to see the first one of Full Metal panic, and the first couple of Fruits Basket; he got to see the first 3 of Bastard!! and the first of Kamen Rider 555. I also got to see the first episode of Azumanga Daioh, though I have to confess it didn't really grab me as much as it seems to have Travis.

In between episodes of anime, we had intended to go out and eat at Lambert's Cafe, but when we got there, we found it was going to be a 45-minute wait, so we came home and Travis made spaghetti instead. It was a good dinner.

This morning, we watched a couple more of Fruits Basket, and then I showed him the first episode of Johnny Sokko, the live-action Giant Robo, and then showed him the first episode of Giant Robo the anime. After that, Travis set up one of the three laptops he'd brought with him—a G3 Wallstreet Macintosh—with OSX so I could play around with it. This is a similar Mac to the one I'm going to be getting refurbed as soon as it's ready to be sold to me, and I'm starting to see what a handy little machine it is. At the moment, I'm listening to some selections from the Giant Robo score via iTunes while I type this journal entry on the keyboard. The laptop is connected by Ethernet cable to the router so I can access the Internet thereupon. In about an hour or so, Travis will have to head out, driving up to St. Louis, and I'll be sorry to see him go.

All things considered, the visit has been a decent success. We haven't gotten to do quite all the things I had hoped we would, but we did enough. And if Travis can come down again some other weekend, maybe we can do more. There are so many good movies and anime Travis has not yet seen, and I consider it my duty to see to his proper cultural education. :) And it is so much more fun watching stuff together than alone.

And darn it, Travis has gotten me interested in several new anime, which I'll have no chance whatsoever to see in this town unless I go out and buy them, or perhaps subscribe to Greencine. Sigh, what's a guy to do?
