A bit of a party atmosphere held sway here at MCI this morning; I arrived to find all the people from the floor gathered in the center, where a platform, cameras, and spotlights were set up on a couple of MCI executives as a nationwide broadcast (via MCI's internal network) aired. There were boxes at each of our seats containing little MCI tzotzkes like Tshirt, ball cap, post-it notepad (which, for some reason, was printed (or at least adhesed) upside-down), decal, cup, and a retractable twine badge/keyring holder. There were even little MCI-logo cupcakes at each bay, and in the cafeteria, and there was pizza from Bredeaux (not my favorite, but edible) for lunch (though by the time we got to lunch at 3 p.m., it was rather cold. Still, by definition, free pizza is good pizza). Apparently we were celebrating the end of MCI's hundred day plan for laying the foundation for getting out of bankruptcy. And we'll continue the celebration tomorrow, with a catered lunch.

Now, according to the broadcast, MCI/Worldcom shall be known only as MCI. Within a few months, MCI will be rolling out DSL for businesses and residences as part of their Neighborhood bundle (and I'm gonna hop right on ASAP, since that $25 a month MCI credit ought to go somewhere). And, in a move that ought to be amusing to all the long-time computer nerds out there, MCI's wholesale voice/data division will resurrect an old, familiar brandname: UUNET.

After work tonight, I plan to head over to the nearby Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and/or Kmart to see what storage options they have for CDROMs. I have lots and lots of them burned and lying around in boxes, and as part of the move consolidation I really ought to get some kind of a mini-file cabinet that I can stick them in, like I used to use for floppy discs.

And then tomorrow...Miyazaki DVDs. Oh, yes, they will be mine.

Final footnote: Given the song's attitude toward office work, it's rather amusing to hear the Police's "Synchronicity II" coming through the music speakers of a workplace like this. :)

UUNet huh? Everything old is new again...

Gotta love the "Yay! We stove off insolvency! Let's spend gobs of money on silly stuff!" approach.
