I feel like an idiot. I've just taken half a dozen calls from annoyed to irate customers, none of which (I feel) I have handled particularly well. My average handling time is gonna be through the roof...and I feel like an idiot. Oh, and my voice is going. :P

Maybe it won't be quite this bad by next week.

It's not an easy job by any means, is it?! But, it will be a challenge for you. You will learn ways of speeding things up, tricks of the trades, but some calls are just going to require more effort and finess. I imagine getting a good night's sleep will be important in helping you keep your patience with these self-centered customers.

You will be more relaxed after a few days and it will come easier.
