Did some phone monitoring this afternoon. I was a bit surprised when the fellow I got sat down with to monitor had a book open to a page with a very familiar type font and layout style. "Hey," I asked when he was next off the phone, "is that Ninjas & Superspies?" Turned out it was. He'd never played any pen and paper RPGs, but a friend had brought by his Ninja Turtles RPG and he, an old-school TMNT fan, was fascinated by the level of detail and such in it. I talked with him about RPGs some, between calls; he was interested by the concept, but somewhat appalled by the sheer amount of die-rolling that was called for. "Roll to see if your character has a phobia, chance of it being activated in this situation is +10%, chance of it being activated in this other situation is +5%..." I'll bring in my playtest copy of Nobilis tomorrow and lend it to him, see if I can't convert him to a bit more simpler system. :)

At the end of monitoring, when we were supposed to go to break, our instructor instead called us back into the classroom for yet another change in our schedule. We are training on the "Nationwide," or current customer service phone system. It had been planned that, after this week of training was over, we would all go to A-Bay, two weeks of phone apprenticeship. However, now 7 of our number get to go to another week of training for the older "Zorro" system that's being phased out in the next few months. For the five of us who stay in Nationwide, the entire shift schedule has changed. "Many Changes Instantly" indeed.

From what I've seen of Zorro, I really don't want to mess with it—especially since it's going to be entirely obsolete by August. The sooner I A-Bay and get into the real workforce, the sooner I start earning commissions and points and things. I suspect that those who wanted to stay (and more actually did want to stay than they had slots to accommodate) were feeling too overwhelmed by the instruction so far and thought that an extra week of it, even on an entirely different system, would clear things up for them somehow. Or else they were so afraid of getting out on the floor that they'd do whatever they could to delay the inevitable. Doesn't seem like the best choice to me.
