There had been a lot of speculation about what movie would win—whether Disney's money would buy it for Lilo and Stitch or if they would fully support Spirited Away—but I'm glad to say that for once the best film did win: Spirited Away won Best Animated Feature tonight.
Now, I wonder if Disney will follow through on its promise to rerelease the movie with a big Lilo and Stitch-style budget if the movie won. It would mean I might actually get to see it on the big screen, since it was here and gone in a week on its first release.
Nice to see Miyazaki getting the recognition he deserves. Too bad there wasn't someone there to accept the trophy for him.
And is it just me, or was Michael Moore's turning his thankyou speech into a bully pulpit to slag on Bush and the war effort in just a wee bit of bad taste? He was roundly booed (which surprised me a little, given Hollywood's liberal proclivities, but I guess people can be decent after all), and then Steve Martin made a joke about the teamsters helping him into the trunk of his limo.
