First day on the job
Oct. 7th, 2002 10:49 pmWell, it was a good evening.
They bolted in a passenger seat to one of the delivery vehicles, so that I could go out with Greg, the fellow from yesterday. We had a slightly busier night tonight than last night, but this time I was driving, and it was a smaller vehicle.
The Ford Focus is really neat. Power steering, built-in CD player, and of course the cooler and hotbox...
By the end of the four hour night, we'd made about $20 worth of tips, which we split between us. It was nice...if I'd been alone, and taken home all the money, I'd have made a total of $8/hr, which was $1/hr more than Kmart paid me. And I got much of it up-front, as take-home tip money. This is nice; I think I'm gonna enjoy working here.
Another neat thing about the job is that, when we don't have anything that requires doing, we're basically on our own, and we can go wherever and do whatever we want. For instance, Greg had me go by Sears in the Battlefield Mall so that he could run in and pay a bill. Since we have an hour in which to truck the stuff around, and often it isn't even ready by the time we get to the restaurant, we aren't usually in a particular hurry (unless we're running behind).
The most important thing, I think, is going to be reminding myself to keep my eyes on the road, to concentrate, to make sure I'm clear before I change lanes. It's a little tricky in those cars, given that much of the rear window is obscured by an advertising decal. But I'm thinking, hoping, and praying that I can handle it.
Getting to work tomorrow may be a bit of a challenge; there's expected to be heavy traffic on the section of Campbell just north of the job site. The highway department even has some traffic cones out, and a big road sign flashing the message "expect delays starting on Tuesday". Why? Springfield's first Krispy Kreme is opening up. It's really something, what they're doing...they've got people camped out in tents in the parking lot, and radio station vans, and all sorts of things. It's all quite spectacular...and I'm sure it's going to make getting to work, and getting to some of the restaurants we serve, much harder.
Anyway, I'm gonna relax a bit, then head to bed.
