Well, here I am, defragmenting my hard drive. It occurred to me that I might perhaps make Windows work better, and thus the Sims work better, if I did a little judicious disk cleanup and defragging.

I've learned some interesting things. For instance, if you let a disk get really messed up, it may take multiple passes with the defragmenter to get it straightened out. Seriously, the Windows 2000 defragging program gave it a single pass, claimed it was finished...but it left lots of red patches of fragmented files in its display, and when I ran analysis of the drive again, it recommended defragmenting the drive. So I'm running it again, and it's making more patches of blue out of the red. I suspect I may end up running it yet a third time, though. I wonder how much this will improve my Windows performance and/or load time?

I've been learning a few more interesting things about The Sims, too. Most notably, how to bundle the various .iff object files together into .far collections, to make the game load and work faster. And how to categorize older downloadable objects, for use with the new category system in the add-on packs. And I have to admit I've been getting very proficient at reinstalling...whether I like it or not. Hopefully, after I get Hot Date in a couple of days, I can do it for the last time for a while.

Got notification that the return box for the CliƩ (I'm posting from Windows, so I can do that funky accent mark thing now) shipped today; I should have it tomorrow. Then I'll be without the CliƩ for another week. I sure hope they send me a new one this time.

I finished reading A Damsel in Distress by P.G. Wodehouse today--one of his earlier works that has gone into public domain and so is available on the Black Mask pub-dom e-book site. I think it must surely be one of Wodehouse's better works...it was so funny that it defies description, but it involves about three different troubled love affairs that all interweave in the best Wodehousian fashion. I think that the movie Gosford Park owes a great deal to the writings of P.G. Wodehouse.

Ah, and there goes the defragmenter again. I've now defragged the thing five times. It seems to have done all it's going to do, but claims it still needs defragging. Time to hit Tucows and see if there's anything better in the way of defragging utilities out there...
