Crummy day

Today has not been a red-letter day for me. In trouble at work (enough said there), plus...my Clie stopped working, a month to the day after I purchased it. The screen (digitizer) no longer responds to taps.

So, I dropped by Circuit City after work, figuring, hey, since I purchased the additional 2-year warranty plan for $44, then I must be covered, right? They'll swap me another one, and I'll be back out the door, right?

Wrong. Seems they don't carry that model anymore. In fact, I checked...nobody carries that model anymore. And there isn't any sort of replacement for it yet. There's no other Palm compatible machine with 320-squared resolution in my price range. (The only others around are the color and higher-end Clies, which are way out of my price range.) So, even though Circuit City could refund the $217 I paid for the device plus its service plan, there isn't anything else desirable to spend it on.

So, I called Sony support. In the past, when I owned a Palm IIIe, or a Handspring Visor, both companies had amazing levels of support. When something went wrong, they'd take my credit card number for security then ship me a refurb unit in a box I could use to send my broken one back in. So, I'd have my new unit overnight from when it was broken. Surely Sony would have a similar level of support, right?

Wrong. Not only do I have to ship the device to their service center (in California) for repair...but they insisted that I send them a copy of my receipt to prove I had bought it! This despite my having registered it online, with serial number and everything, just as they had asked. Some "service."

But I don't have any other option. My PDA serves as my secondary memory...it reminds me when to do things, keeps track of peoples' phone numbers for me, reminds me of what my K-mart hours are, and--most importantly--helps me manage my finances. I have to have one that works...and given the choice between the 415 and something else with half the resolution, I'd rather have the 415. At least I managed to back everything up to my memory stick before it gave out altogether. So, I just got back from sending the fax.

I hope that nothing else goes wrong this weekend. :(

Likewise here (hoping that saying as much isn't doubly invoking Murphy, sigh...)
(I was considerably surprised to learn that Palm is no longer making the III(etc) line at all, some while back, when I needed documentation for the IIIc... thankfully they at least still had the documentation at the site.)
Best luck.
