Maybe I'm crazy...
Apr. 30th, 2002 12:07 am...but I'm planning a road trip to the vicinity of Kansas City in about a month.
See, that's when Star Wars Episode II: Return of the Clones comes out. It seems that there are 19 digital-projection theaters in the country that are capable of showing the movie the way George Lucas wanted it to be seen--in full, clear, clean, crisp digital projection. And one of them is in Olathe, Kansas, a suburb of K.C.
It won't be the first time I've road-tripped to K.C. for a movie. It won't even be the second. I went up to see Princess Mononoke twice (one of those with my friend
blacknumber01, who will also be accompanying me to the Star Wars screening if all goes well), then Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In both cases, the films ended up coming to Springfield later, so if I'd only waited, I could have seen them without the trip. But I still found it a worthwhile journey. And this time, well, there's no telling when local 'plexes will go digital; it seems there's a bit of feuding between the theater chains and the studios as to who should shoulder the bulk of the 6- or 7-figure cost of upgrading the theaters to the digital standard.
Fan craziness expresses in different ways, I suppose. Some people line up for weeks ahead of time waiting for the gates to open on that starting day. As for me, I'm just going to buy my tickets in advance and try to get us there about three hours early for an afternoon showing on the first day. Here's hoping everything works out...may the Force be with me!
