Welcome, Time Machine, & rest of my daytt
Mar. 26th, 2002 08:55 pmFirst of all, a quick shout-out to a friend of mine who just became a new LJ user,
masonk. Everybody make him feel at home! (Oh, man, I just realized...I'm gonna have to redo all my incest maps now. :)
I don't know what it is about movie reviewers, but they sometimes seem to have the power to make one feel stupid.
I've just been reading Ebert and Berardinelli ragging on The Time Machine, which
blacknumber01 and I went out to see this evening. It's annoying; neither of them can seem to find very much worth enjoying in the movie, and it makes me wonder a bit if I'm some kind of a schmuck for liking it so much.
No, it's not 100% faithful to the book. It's maybe 50% faithful, what with all the changes and the stuff they added. But you know, I don't really care. This is a different time; they did different things. Just because the story is written down in a book first doesn't mean it's inviolate. There were some things I disliked about the original story, and they weren't as much in evidence in the film--and it entertained me for a couple of hours; I didn't feel gypped of my money. That's all I really ask.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. The day began when I woke up at 9 a.m. and wasn't able to get back to sleep. I'm starting to wonder if I don't need as much sleep anymore as I thought. I usually try to get at least 8 or preferably 9 hours, but it hasn't been working out that way lately. Perhaps if I got to bed earlier...? Have to try that.
Drove up to the salvage grocery to get some provisions, candy for movie-watching, and so on. On the way back, I hit the Open Book again, found a copy of A Fire Upon the Deep and also one of The Lore of the Unicorn. I now have three copies of that book--one's being sent to a friend, one I'm keeping, and the third...well, I don't know. It's not exactly the sort of thing just anybody would want to read for entertainment. Have to see if anyone wants it.
After mistakenly taking a wrong turn and ending up way north of where I needed to be, I finally made my way back south to my apartment, where I put perishable groceries in the freezer, showered, shaved, and made ready for the trip over to Joe's. Once there, I showed him the Adventure character sheets that Quixote_One made for the AeonAdventure mailing list--the ones that look exactly like the ones from the back of the book, but can be filled in by computer. He, and the rest of his buddies in the house, were duly impressed--as was Joe, once I set up MS Office on his computer and showed him how to fill in the sheet. I also got him set up with Mozilla. Then we headed out to see the movie.
On the way, we stopped briefly at the Buckingham barbecue restaurant on South Campbell for dinner. As a result, we were barely on time for the movie, but we still made it all right. (Good food, but they forgot to include a fork for my cole slaw and baked beans.) After the film, I dropped Joe back at his house then headed home.
