Okay, so I couldn't resist; My day today
Mar. 23rd, 2002 07:34 pmI ordinarly hate those personality quiz things, but I couldn't resist this one, alas.

Which HP Kid Are You?
As for the rest of the day, it was fairly decent. Was woken up early by four little furry feet on my chest, and couldn't get back to sleep, so I had a couple of hours to noodle around on-line before going to work. I went ahead and watched a few more Invader Zim episodes--I'm really starting to like that show--and toddled off to work.
It seemed to go better today than yesterday. I'm getting the hang of this self-checkout thing--even if I ended up having to reboot all four SCOTS terminals plus the monitor computer because, being NT 4.0 boxen running on Celeron 450s, they seem to tend to sl-o-o-o-o-w down after accumulating a sizeable uptime. After the reboot, though, they all worked great. At least, as great as they ever ordinarily do.
It's funny how many people seem to assume that the self-checkout stations only take credit cards. I can understand them not thinking they'd take checks (and in a way, they'd be half-right--we have to suspend the transaction at the register, then take the suspend-receipt up to the pay-station island and call it up there to take the payment), but why cash? Especially when there's a clearly obvious "cash goes in here" slot with a green blinky light on it at the end of the register. I suppose it's because the only other "pay where you are self-service" thing they've ever encountered is at those gas stations with the card-reading pumps.
Other customer foibles don't surprise me too much, though. Things like forgetting to bag one item before trying to scan the next, resting one's purse or hand on the scales and causing error messages, forgetting to tap the "OK" button once the credit card slip has been signed, not understanding the difference between credit and debit cards...the list goes on and on, and I'm too tired to write the whole thing out. Suffice it to say that I have discovered the truth of the old saying that as soon as you make something idiot-proof, they invent a better idiot.
Last but not least, I may have successfully released a BookCrossing book today! My book journal entry for it there has the details; there's no point in making this entry even longer by repeating them here.
