I've been kind of neglecting my journal lately, and that's not right. But hey, I've been under the kind of stress that makes one want to do as little as one can that's not strictly necessary, and that includes writing in this thing.

My library training course project seemed to go pretty well Friday morning. There were a few little glitches and snags, but nothing we couldn't salvage. And then, after a bit of hanging around, it was off to see the Harry Potter movie! The movie was pretty darned good--much the same as any book adaptation, they kept some of the best parts but had to leave some of the best parts out, yet they still hewed relatively close to the plot and spirit of the books. I've been defending it in the various newsgroups and mailing lists I'm on where it gets occasionally discussed. Though...

I suppose I do have to agree with some of the reviewers who say that the movie lacked a certain spark, a certain zest that would satisfy many non-fans. When I try to look at it through the eyes of someone who hasn't read any of the books, I realize that there are probably a lot of confusing parts. Like someone else put it, this is more moving pictures for fans of the book than it is a strictly stand-alone movie.

But it's also true that Sorcerer's|Philosopher's Stone is the weakest book of the series so far--being mostly setup, plus a minor mystery story (that the movie made even more minor). The movies based on the next few books should be a lot better--though I'm seriously starting to wonder how, if at 2 1/2 hours Sorcerer's Stone still ended up leaving an awful lot out, they'll handle the 700 page monster Goblet of Fire. You just couldn't do that one with anything less than a four hour movie with a 15 minute intermission, sort of like Branaugh's Hamlet.

That night, I just vegged, wrote a bit on a story, and then woke up the next morning to write more. Spent Saturday doing a whole lot of nothing but chilling out, for which I still feel a little guilty given that I still have a couple of projects and things coming up due the start of next week. This evening, after work, I need to sit down and try to tackle some of it, as well as make some necessary modifications to the CD-RW containing materials for the library training course--there's still another session on Monday, and my projectmates want to make some changes.

Heard from another Springfield, Missouri livejournaller this morning, [livejournal.com profile] artmomz. She says that she thinks she's seen me somewhere. It's not surprising. I'm apparently a rather memorable person, not so much for my face, per se, but for the way I act. I'll be honest, I kind of walk to the beat of a different drummer sometimes, and that's putting it mildly. About half the strangers I've met who know me from somewhere note that I nearly ran them down with my bicycle at some point. I'm only mildly exaggerating.

It's a bit of a frustrating thing for me, actually--I just don't have any kind of a knack for remembering people's faces, or remembering the names that go with the faces when I do remember the faces. It leads to an awful lot of bluffing through conversations, going, "Oh, yeah, how are you? Been a while, hasn't it?" all the while thinking "Who the heck is this?" Happens all the time when I'm on the job at K-Mart.

Speaking of which, I really should stir my lazy butt out of this chair and shave and throw on some work clothes. I'm working noon to four thirty today. (If you're in town, stop by, see me, buy something! ;) Until the next time!

And you know...

I was going to ask you how the movie was. I really want to see it, but I will probably wait for it to come out on DVD. (I don't get out much entertainment wise...for various reasons.)

I am very tempted to buy some of the toys for my office at school (SBU), but I know that some of the more conservative students think HP is evil. (A few of them were telling me how Disney movies were evil, so they would probably never visit me in my office if I had HP decor.)
