So I pounded out a bunch of articles for my new side job last month, and should be earning just a smidge under $1300 for it if my calculations are correct. That's my biggest extra payday yet. I've been thinking about putting about half of it in savings, bringing my balance back up to over what the account was when I first started it.

Then I happened to notice this little beauty: the Lenovo IdeaPad Y400 model 59371954. With a 2.40 GHz Intel i7-3630QM CPU, 8 gigs of RAM, GeForce GT750M video card, 1 terabyte hard drive, and 16 gig SSD for the OS. The monitor's only a 720P 1366x768 panel, but I have a light 1080p monitor I can use with it when I'm visiting the folks at home. It gets pretty good user reviews, with the only major problems being a weak Wi-Fi card and a fairly hot operating temperature. With a list price of $1300, it's on sale for Mother's Day at $800. Further, with my employee discount from Teletech, I'd get another $30 off on top of that, plus $15.40 worth of employee discount coupon vouchers.

What a computer! I don't know if its i7-ness makes its processor better than the 3.40 GHz i5-3570 I have in my desktop, but it's almost certainly in the same league. It would make a great little gaming PC—my 4-year-old MSi Core 2 Duo is getting decidedly shop-worn, with cracked hinges, a missing F2 key, and stains (cat urine?) all down the left and right sides of the screen, and it was never a terribly capable gaming machine to begin with. With this computer, I could play games almost as well as I can on my desktop, anywhere. Then I could pass my old laptop on to some deserving soul who would be happy to have any laptop computer.

Of course, then reality intervenes. This is only my first major payout, and I have a perfectly serviceable desktop on which to play games—which I just spent about $500 upgrading to be the best gaming machine I've ever owned. I really do owe some money into my savings account. I don't tend to want to play games somewhere else all that often anyway (I usually have better things to do at the parents' house, such as my laundry). And my old laptop still works perfectly well for writing and surfing the Internet, which I ought to do more of anyway.

And if the sale on the Y400 is going to end in a few days, well, it's not as if it will never go on sale again. If I wait a few months and can do just as well during them, I'll have an ample cushion built up so that I can afford to blow $800 or so (or $950 or so including the extended warranty). I really should get over wanting to blow whatever I make on whatever nifty new toy I see just because shiny.

Sure is a neat laptop, though. And what a great bargain price!
